Amongst the landscape of Bondi restaurant establishment comes a playful newcomer that mixes the gritty vibe of Tokyo street culture with an eclectic, communal eatery in the middle of Sydney’s hippest beach neighborhood. Aptly called Paper Planes, the name eludes to the installation of crafty paper planes on the interior ceiling that juxtapose the Damien Hirst-esque skateboard decks also clustered about. The space feels very much nightclub with bass of DJs spinning throughout the day and night as packed tabletops and long eat-at bar frames one of the city’s prettiest (and tannest) dining crowds.

The Food

Great for those looking to mix and mingle of dine with more than 2, a playful starter menu includes salmon tartare nachos, char grilled sea scallops and Yellow Fin tuna tataki in addition to a full sushi bar that sliced up sashimi and cut rolls. Main course includes confit duck ramen, squid ink risotto and braised beef short ribs that fall from the bone.

Last Word

Tokyo street food meets Bondi surf culture in playful gastro-bar that’s equal parts food and fun.
